Waltons Friendship Society

The History of it all.

Earl Hamner spent his childhood days in the Blue Ridge Mountain of Virginia and this inspired him to write all about his own family and the many different experiences they had during the Great Depression. He dreamed of becoming a writer and after leaving scholl attended the university in Richmond. After a spell in the army he began work on a radio station and later moved to New York City to work for NBC Radio whilst publishing his first novel called "Fifty Roads to Town". He married Jane and they have two children. Other books followed including "Spencers Mountain" and after this was made into a Warner brothers film starring Henry Fonda and Maureen O'Hara. Then a pilot was made called The Homecoming:- A Christmas Story and from this the series was born and the rest as they say, is history!. The Waltons had been created.

Nearly every episode opens following the credits with Earl's voice-over, briefly reminising about the events about to be depicted and setting up the story. In the signature scene that closes almost every episode, the family house is enveloped in darkness, apart from one, two or three lights on in the upstairs bedroom windows. Through voice-overs two or more characters make some brief comments related to that episodes events, and then bid each other goodnight.

The series pilot show was the TV movie, "The Homecoming:A Christmas Story" and was broadcast on December 19th 1971. The first series was shown in September 1972 and ran for nine series, and when it ended in 1981, three TV movie sequels followed in 1982, with another three during the 1990's. The series is set during the Great Depression and World War 2, and follows the family from 1933 through to 1946.

The Waltons Friendship Society.

This was started in 1990 in England. Two years later it was reorganized by Ray Knight and Irene Porter. They ran it for members via a regular newsletter and kept fans of the show informed on all things to do with the famous series. Irene has done a sterling job over the years and has now decided to take a back seat and has been made an Honourary Life Member of the Society in recognition of all the hard work, effort and pure dedication she has given to the society. It is here that we recognize the work Irene has put in for the Waltons Friendship Society.

The Society has adopted the words spoken by creator Earl hamner as a sort of strap line for the Society, " They Endured And They Prevailed".

 The Waltons Set

Most of the filming took place at the Warner Brothers Lot. The interior scenes such as Waltons House, Ikes Store and the Baldwin Sisters House were on stage 26. On the back lot was the exterior sets such as Walton house, Ikes store, Drucillas pond and country roads. The church was on the "Western Set" and the school house and Charlottesville were in the "Mid-Western set". The exterior of the Baldwins house was on the Warner Brothers Ranch. Filming also took place on location at a little area called Franklin Canyon between San fernando Valley and Beverly Hills. The cast would also go to Frazier Park and complete the exterior scenes while the weather was good before moving to the interior shots.

This is the "Logo" of The Waltons Friendship Society. It Depicts the open window of John-Boy's upstairs bedroom showing a book and a lighted lamp where he would sit and write his thoughts and feelings.
